An icon is a "window to heaven." Among the many fascinating images in this San Damiano icon is a portrayal of the Ascension at the top of the cross, with Christ appearing from a red circle carrying His golden cross scepter, welcomed into heaven by a host of angels beneath God the Father's extended hand. Note the holy angels around the crossbar, and on the right lower side of the cross a small rooster, recalling Peter's poignant denial and reminding us to be ever vigilant in our own faith. Finally we see at the foot of the cross the four most beloved saints of the Franciscan Order: Saint Francis, Saint Clare, Saint Anthony of Padua, and Saint Bonaventure. This candle reminds us of the tender love of Jesus, who spoke to Saint Francis, "Francis, go, rebuild My Church." We are reminded of Saint Francis' fervent love for Jesus in return. As the candle is used up by the flame, so Saint Francis was used up by the flame of Christ's love in his heart. May this candle remind us that Jesus desires to make us also His instruments of peace, as was Saint Francis. It is ever true today as always, that Christ has no other hands, but yours.

The Paschal Candle is the symbol of Christ Jesus, our Risen Savior, the Light of the world. Christ is also symbolized as the Paschal Lamb of the New Covenant. We are ransomed with His precious blood as of a spotless, unblemished (perfect) lamb.

Paschal Candles symbolize Christ rising in glory, conquering death and darkness. A Paschal Candle consists of 51% beeswax and is adorned with the symbol of a cross, an alpha and omega, and with the date of the year presented.

Each candle also has five grains of incense inserted on the cross representing the five wounds of Jesus. The Alpha (first letter of the Greek alphabet) is typically placed above the cross representing Christ as the "beginning" and the Omega (last letter of the Greek alphabet) is placed below the cross representing Christ as the "end", thus symbolizing His divinity as well.

The date of year is usually placed on either side of the cross or below it. Paschal Candles may also feature colors and design components that are symbolic of Christ, God the Father, and the Holy Spirit, and/or are suited to the liturgy of Easter.
